How far is it to the beach?

The nearest beach is Readymoney Cove which is 15 minutes walk down a little path. It has a sandy beach, rockpools, a sunbathing pontoon that you can swim out to, lavatories and a new little beach cafe.

A short car ride away - 10 minutes - is Polkerris which is a bigger sandy beach overlooked by the Rashleigh Arms and with a couple of cafes.  The good news is that one of the cafes has been taken over by the team that run Sam's - one of the best family restaurants in Fowey.  There are sailing and wind surfing lessons available there.  There is a harbour wall that the brave can jump off at high tide.  For a more secluded beach you could try Polridmouth which is about a 30 minute walk over the fields and that has a wonderful stretch of sand, rockpools and huge piles of skimming-stones but no other facilities.   And the very energetic among you can walk up from there to the Gribben Head.

There is a small beach at Whitehouse in the centre of Fowey, just down from the Esplanade.

There is also Carlyon Bay towards St. Austell. This is a long shingle beach which shelves away quite sharply.

How far is it to the shops?

There is a small local store and a Post Office about 10 minutes walk away and there is a butcher with a deli counter in Fowey and another mini mart..  The nearest large supermarkets are Tesco and Asda at St Austell - about 6 miles away.  There is an excellent fishmongers and greengrocers at Par on the way to St Austell.
